  • Mechanically Fixed / Foil Faced Insulation - Kingspan TR26, Ecotherm EcoFix & Recticel Eurothane EuroDeck - High-performance, fibre-free and rigid thermoset insulation boards. These have a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mk, foil facing on both sides and are fully compatible with most mechanically fixed single-ply membranes and most green roof systems.
  • Fully Adhered / Tissue Faced Insulation - Kingspan Thermaroof TR27, Ecotherm EcoBond & Recticel Powerdeck F - High-grade, high-performance and fibre-free boards used for advanced insulation applications on new build & refurbishment projects. These have a glass tissue facing on both sides and are compatible with non-bituminous and fully bonded membranes, partially built-up felt, mastic asphalt and cold liquid-applied waterproofing systems.
  • Rockwool Hardrock - An effective flat roof insulation system compatible with a range of bonded & mechanically fixed roof systems. They have high-quality acoustic, fireproof and thermal properties ideal for new and old buildings.
  • Torch On / Bitumen Faced - Ecotherm EcoTorch - High-performance insulation with a fibre-free rigid thermoset PIR core. Available in varying thicknesses from 30mm-150mm, they are suitable for flat roofs with partially bonded torch-applied multi-layer bituminous waterproofing. EcoTorch is formerly known as EcoTherm Inno-Torch, these share the same specifications as Kingspan TR24, making them a suitable alternative.

Why should I use an insulation board for my flat roof?

Energy efficient
Insulation generally has low thermal conductivity, creating thermal barriers between inside and outdoors to reduce heat loss - keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Durable
Rigid insulation boards are manufactured using high-quality materials for compressive strength to last a lifetime. If left undamaged, they can last between 80-100 years before needing replacing.

Soundproofing
Depending on your insulation's thickness, it will help to reduce noise travelling through the building, as well as from outside.

Easy to install
They are easy to install and can be cut down to your required length using a standard saw or cutting tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Flat roof insulation allows interiors of any home to feel warmer during the winter, and cooler during the summer. Hardrock and PIR work well as insulation for flat roofs and can be often found in modern constructions. This is due to them being rigid board with high quality thermal properties compared to older types of roof insulation, such as glass wool.

PIR stands for polyisocyanurate which is a type of rigid foam insulation that's used in building construction

For any flats or homes that are uninsulated, you should aim to insulate your flat roofs with insulation boards totalling around 150mm in thickness.

New government guidelines from 2021 that were updated in 2022 have stated that for flat roofs target U-value W/(m2-k) of 0.11 for new build dwellings, 0.15 for Extensions and 0.16 for refurbishments and 0.18 for other buildings that are not classed as dwellings.

Below is an example of how to understand how thick your flat roof insulation should be:

0.11 W/(m2·K) for a New Build Dwelling

  • Foil Faced - TR26/EcoFix/EuroDeck would be 180mm
  • Tissue Faced - TR27/EcoBond/Powerdeck F would be 210mm
  • Rockwool Hardrock would be 335mm

0.15 W/(m2·K) for an Extension on a Dwelling

  • Foil Faced - TR26/EcoFix/EuroDeck would be 130mm
  • Tissue Faced - TR27/EcoBond/Powerdeck F would be 150mm
  • Rockwool Hardrock would be 235mm

0.16 W/(m2·K) for a Refurbishment on a Dwelling

  • Foil Faced - TR26/EcoFix/EuroDeck would be 130mm
  • Tissue Faced - TR27/EcoBond/Powerdeck F would be 140mm
  • Rockwool Hardrock would be 220mm

0.18 W/(m2·K) for non-dwelling

  • Foil Faced - TR26/EcoFix/EuroDeck would be 120mm
  • Tissue Faced - TR27/EcoBond/Powerdeck F would be 120mm
  • Rockwool Hardrock would be 190mm

These calculations are based on a timber deck with Single Ply / EPDM Rubber Roofing.

Check out the government guidelines here.

Yes, installing flat roof insulation boards should be done alongside a vapour barrier to prevent dampness, mould and rot from occurring.

Rockwool Hardrock is the most fire-resistant insulation, with a euro class rating of A2-s1,d0 (BS EN 13501-1) and fire resistance up to 120 minutes.
